How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Nutrition Manager and Nutrition Specialist, the Consultant will to provide information on the nutrition situation in Uganda to inform the development and revision of policies, guidelines and programmes in the country. The specific objectives of the activity are to provide temporal trends for nutrition indicators, and to examine associations between nutrition indicators and determinants.


The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) and the Ministry of Health conduct a Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) approximately every five years, starting in 1998. There are a total of six UDHS in the country, with the most recent completed in 2016/17. The UBOS Uganda National Panel Survey (UNPS) added a nutrition module in 2018, but results will not be available until 2019, and currently, the UDHS is the only source of national, household survey data on nutrition in Uganda. The Uganda Malaria Indicator Survey (UMIS) provides additional information on anaemia in the country. In 2018, UNICEF supported the Government of Uganda (GoU) to develop a nutrition situation analysis based on the results from the most recent UDHS and UMIS. The situation analysis determined that further data analysis was needed to provide more comprehensive information on the nutrition situation in the country. This assignment is to carry out secondary analysis of the UDHS, UMIS and some sub-national surveys, such as the Food Security and Nutrition Assessment (FSNA).

Key Tasks:

1. Secondary analysis of UDHS, UMIS and FSNA for temporal trends in nutrition indicators (32 days).

  • Trend analysis of complementary feeding, which requires recoding because questionnaire changed over the years.
  • Trend analysis of z-score and hemoglobin to complement findings on prevalence trends.
  • Trend analysis for all key nutrition indicators at regional level, which requires recoding because geographic boundaries changed over the years.
  • Trend analysis of acute malnutrition among urban poor
  • Trend analysis of adolescent and adult height
  • Trend analysis of low birth weight
  • Trend analysis of Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition programme performance in selected regions
  • 2. Secondary analysis of UDHS, UMIS, and FSNA to examine agreement and associations (31 days).

  • Analysis of the determinants of stunting (associations) in two regions where stunting does not appear to be associated with poverty.
  • Association analysis between disability and malnutrition
  • Association analysis between public/private facility antenatal care or delivery and iron folate supplementation/early initiation of breastfeeding
  • Analysis of measurement quality in West Nile to explain the very high rates of wasting in the sub-region.
  • Evaluation of child and maternal anemia and anthropometric trends to determine if changes over time can be associated with causal factors.
  • Agreement between arm circumference and weight-for-height z-scores to classify malnutrition in selcted regions.
  • Equity analysis for nutrition indicators in Karamoja.
  • 3. Development of dissemination materials (21 days)

  • Prepare a combined report on temporal trends, agreements, and associations
  • Draft and finalize one or several manuscripts on selected findings for publication
  • Develop policy briefs (3) on key findings
  • Prepare a presentation on analysis findings

  • Graduate Degree in nutrition, statistics, public health or related field
  • Five years progressively responsible professional work experience in the health sector
  • Experience analyzing nutrition indicators from household surveys, such as DHS or MICS
  • Spoken and written fluency in English
  • Good analytical and report writing skills.
  • First author report/publications should be available from CV.
