MWANZA URBAN WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION AUTHORITY (MWAUWASA) is one of the 25 selected water operators to participate in the Dutch WaterWorX program. It was selected by VITENS EVIDES INTERNATIONAL (VEI) from the Netherlands and signed a Water Operator Partnership (WOP) agreement under a program nicknamed ‘KARIBU MAJI MWANZA PROJECT’ to improve overall performance by building capacity of staff as both the partners mutually understand that capacity development is key to utility turn around in performance.

The WaterWorX, is a four years program that is largely funded by the government of the Netherlands. The program intends to achieve the following three key objectives at its completion: –

Increase WASH coverage, particularly in the Low Income Areas (SDG6) by serving 33,000 poor people by year 2021 with direct project investments and 100,000 people until 2021 as part of ongoing MWAUWASA

Reduce Non-Revenue Water by 10% point (pp) by year 2021.

 Creating an enabling environment in terms of energy reduction, climate adaption, long term investment proposals.

 Realize capacity development through training, short courses and gender equality propagating.

The Young Expert will be required to play die following roles at minimum:

 Write (together with MWAUWASA staff) Investment proposals for water and sanitation services.

 Identification of innovation opportunities and technologies/ methodology within die scope of die project

 Active participation in local/regional networks which exist in die field of water

 Active learning from MWAUWASA employees and Short Term Experts from The Nederlands and apply gained knowledge and skills

 Actively participate in an international Young expert Community of Practice

Provided training through the Young Expert Program

 A two (2) weeks training will be offered in The Netherlands during die first and second year of employment

 A Personal Development Plan to structure personal development

 A personal coach will be assigned to die YE.

 Online masterclasses are offered on specific wrater and sanitation related topics

At die end of die employment, die Young Expert should be able:

 The ability to make use of his/her expertise, instruments and skills in a specific development cooperation working situation

 The Young Expert’s fulfilment of an intermediary role in networking and in die utilisation of die social media, as well as die possession of networking skills within an international context (Water network).

 The conversion of dieoretical knowledge into practical solutions and activities

Driven by a core strategic mandate for research, training and services, the Institute’s work now spans a wide spectrum, covering biomedical and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research and policy translation.

Position Summary

IHI is looking for experienced Environmental Scientist with analytical chemistry skills to work with the Broad One Health Endectocide-based Malaria Intervention in Africa (BOHEMIA) project funded by the UNITAID. This project aims to evaluate the efficiency, safety, acceptability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact of ivermectin-based intervention to provide strong and systematic evidence to local, national and international regulatory authorities to support decision on policy of using ivermectin to reduce malaria transmission.

The candidate will conduct laboratory, semi-field and field experiment to evaluate the environmental effects of ivermectin in the water and soil on non- targeted organism when applied to human and /or livestock especially cattle to reduce malaria transmission.

Duties and Responsibilities

 Conduct sample collections from cattle faces water and soil.

 Conduct analytical chemistry for the sample from semi-field and field conditions.

 Provide written progress report of all experiments to the principal investigator.

 Maintain adequate inventory of supplier for day to day project operations.

 Participate in training and supervising research officer, technicians in the in the team when required.

 Participate in study design, protocol development, data collection and analysis as well as manuscript writing.

 Maintain appropriate relationships between staff within and between units at IHI.

 Undertake any other duties that the PI shall reasonably require from time to time.

 Check the content from village participants before the start of field experiments.

 Ensure the project is conducted with other staffs within and between departments at IHI regularlyat scheduled meetings.

Qualification and Experience

 Holder of a master’s degree in chemistry or environmental chemistry.

 Applicants must have GRE and IELTS/ TOEFL test scores (compulsory) ready for the immediate application for a PhD place in the US.

 Experience in malaria research or analytical chemistry will be an added advantage.
